Please, use this torrent instead the previous one. I do not know if something is wrong with TPB, my uTorrent or my ISP but I was seeding and seeding but I saw no other full copy except of mine.
Got a virus warning for a trojan called 'New Malware.bm' from an updated McAffee on access scan.
To clarify it was in the VirtualDubMod.exe file not the main Fairuse.exe file.
Downloaded and was expecting a program clean of nasties as the uploader has the "Trusted" seal. I was really surpsised to find that after the installation a keylogger was activated.
I have monitored closely the install as I always do with what i download from a public tracker and found the following:
- It is important to notice that no AV or security program is going to detect suspicious content on this torrent BEFORE you actually run the installation process. The EXE file is password protected and cannot be checked as it should. You must wait for that the installation is ready to detect the trojan horse's activity.
- Lots of suspicious activity during the installation process: The installation rutine launch extra programs to try to accure rights it doesn't need on the OS and executes tghings that have nothing to do with FairUse installation.
- After the installation is ready it starts to call home (a known activity of R.A.T.'s)
- The security programs I have in place report KEYLOGGER activity right after the installation and machine restart so a trojan horse has very likely been installed with this.
I have use the commercial version of Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 fully updated. As the EXE file is too big (9mb) I could not send it to Kaspersky's labs for a proper analysis on what exactly the trojan is.
I have re-mount a previous image of my OS disk because it is better to be safe than sorry, specially when we are dealing with keyloggers.
I am at the momment testing this installed on an isolated VMWare totally clean XP install ad can post later the reaults.
As a concussion: Beware of this torrent, and if you have installed it already I recommend you to get a good firewall or security suite that can let you know what is happening on the backstage of your OS. It will probably ring the bell on the keylogger activity.
NOTE:
1. As the strange activity showed up after the installation it is possible that the uploader didn't know about this if he had not installed it before posting it here.
2. There are several Fairuse 2.9 torrents here in TPB with the same file. I have downloaded them and run a binary comparison and they are identical so take care with them too.
3. I will most probably end trying the program from the official website and if it works ok most probably I will support the company and buy it. I just HATE the limited trials and that is why I was going to test it first in a warezed form :)
